Chinook Blast

Winter Festival

February 11 - March 5, 2020

Chinook Blast (Copy)

This February, PARK is partnering with the Chinook Blast Winter Festival to brighten Calgary’s winter with a series of outdoor light-up art installations spotlighting the work of local artists and creators.

The colourful, neon light creations will be free to the public to enjoy throughout the entire six weeks of the festival, providing a unique experience for all ages after-hours in the dark winter months. With the displays divided into five components across the downtown core and East Village, pedestrians will have plenty of opportunities to snap an Instagram-worthy photo while discovering various locations around the city. PARK would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the team that made this project possible: Mark Lang, Norma Lang, Jim & Maggie Lang, Shaun Vang, Nik Maciurzynski, Shea McNaughton, Katrina Martinez and Rachel McIntosh.

Abstract Aurora
— These multi-coloured columns are designed as an abstract representation of the northern lights. Notice the flow of colour as the columns grow larger illustrating the movements of an aurora borealis.

Conciliation
— The vision for this piece came through the collaborative efforts of many spirits coming together. Over the past year the human race stood shoulder to shoulder fighting a silent battle and for our right to exist safely amongst each other. Relationships between Indigenous and Settlers has been shaped by the mutual necessity to survive. Moving forward we seek to build on a foundation of reciprocity and understanding. Acknowledgement and reparations are still needed in order to move forward. Reconciliation is an Indigenous led future. We chose a land acknowledgement to honour the ancestral lands. The mountains and rivers and prairies remember the people that have lived here since time immemorial. The genetic memory of Mohkinsis flows through the veins of the tribes mentioned. The Blanket design is to reclaim the purpose of trade blankets, designs stitched thread by thread weaving in safety, warmth and community. The Syllabics represent the elements, and stand as a visual representation of communication and innovation. Together we rebuild and reclaim this land in the spirit of truth. We own nothing but our body, mind and spirit, we coexist knowing this and we shift into a beautiful future together.

Colour - Where?
— Where would these colours go if they had a place to be? Probably 1993. These colours are inspired by bold & preppy stripes & patterns from 90's fashion, the kind of stuff I would have worn as a young girl. These colours give me the feels, of playing with nowhere to be - ah, the simple life.

Winter Froth
— Immerse yourself in a station of colourful orbs. Winter Froth is a delightful selfie booth best enjoyed with your "family bubble". Warm your eyes with balloons and friends, cuddly bubbles to delight your chinooks. Strike a pose and stir a smile, for coffee or hot chocolate you need after your snaps.

Polychromatic
— This project is inspired by "flower bombing," a concept that uses florals to decorate unexpected objects. These installations typically take place outdoors and in public spaces. The installation, made up of brightly painted, dried, and faux elements, will adorn the telephone booth structure. Creating an immersive experience for the participant.

Winter Gleam
— A magnification of that magical glimmer you see in fresh snow when the light hits it just right. Tiny instances of aurora borealis all around us.
